Low Self-Esteem: A Barrier to Career Mobility

Abstract of Dr. Willis' Presentation
National Consultation on Career Development  27th Annual Convention
January 22, 2001
Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

Low self-esteem is a major barrier to career mobility and job satisfaction resulting in artificial and self-imposed limits on one’s capabilities and opportunities. This workshop will introduce counselors to one type of client who does not respond to traditional vocational assessment and career counseling interventions. Clients who have very low self-esteem, are shame-based, or have strong and persistent feelings of inadequacy require a more sophisticated assessment and intervention strategy than the typical career-counseling client. Based on the work of Albert Ellis’ Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, participants will learn to help clients to overcome their internal barriers to job satisfaction and career development.
