Critical Incident Stress Management in The Workplace

Abstract of Dr. Willis' Presentation
New York Counseling Association  34th Annual Convention
October 19, 2000
Syracuse, NY

Although schools and other organizations seek to prevent workplace violence, it cannot be eliminated. Victims, witnesses and many others are traumatized by acts of violence and must receive immediate and appropriate help. Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) is the emerging “standard of care” for crisis response. This intervention is designed to mitigate the impact of the traumatic event, facilitating the individual’s normal recovery and return to work. This workshop will introduce counselors to Critical Incident Stress Management in the workplace and the important role it can play in a comprehensive workplace violence prevention program.

Since schools are required to have a crisis response plan to help students cope with traumatic events, the focus of this workshop will be on the employee (teacher, counselor, administrator, support staff, custodial staff, etc.) who often are overlooked or whose needs inadequately addressed following an incident of workplace violence.
